And then they leave and you still don't know who they are even though they are a customer. It's crazy. Let me tell this is the reason Retail is dying. It's Data.

Some people say retail is dying because of Ecommerce, it's more convenient. Well as the owner of an Ecommerce and Website Building platform, I think I'm qualified enough to tell you, that Retail is not dying because of  Ecommerce. It's because of data.

Look, Rentals have been going up for some time, and now with inflation, the cost of living is going up too. It might feel scary, but you shouldn't look at this as the hardest time to be in business, it's the most essential time to be in business, as a business owner, unlike other people, if you can take control, you have the opportunity to get yourself ahead. To succeed you have to be smart, and you must start to treat your retail rental just like an ecommerce business would. You need to treat your retail rental, like a marketing expense. Your rent brings in the foot traffic. It's like your Ad spend. And just like Ad spend the price is going up. But if you were an ecommerce business, you would do everything in your power to capture that data. So as a retailer, why don't you? If you could capture the data of everybody that walked through your door, you would reduce your Ad dependency, and start marketing to your data, for free, forever, just like an ecommerce business does when people signup. Data might sound complex. But it's not. Today there's data for everything, there's so much data, marketers don't even know what to do with it. It can get very noisy. But let me strip back all those metrics, and make data simple for you.  In my experience, the success of any online business always comes back to just three metrics:


  How many customers
     Database size
     (#Members)


 How much they spend
     Average Transaction Value
     (AVT)


 How often they come back
     Return visits
     (Returning Spend)
      

As a retail business, you need to capture these metrics and live and brief this data. But how do you do that? When you don't even know who your customers are? Look, with your POS system you can certainly see your ATV, but you certainly can't see your returning spend. Or if you're doing a Loyalty Club on a POS forget about, all you're doing is looking at data from people who want discounts, and buy the products you sell at cost. Those Loyalty Clubs are not increasing your ATV, i.e. they don't make people spend more. They almost always make people spend less.

Do you know, there is one thing that holds people back more than anything else. And everybody in this room knows exactly what it is. The thing that holds people back is the worry of what other people think about them. And you know what, we're not going to solve that problem in tonights talk, we're not going to solve that problem, ever. So if you're thinking right now that you're going to get your staff to sign people up to a customer database when they walk though the door, let me tell you, you're not. That's just awkward, don't make your staff do that! So what are we going to do?  That's enough about all our problems!
